Lisa Brenneman, owner of Florida Veggies and more will be holding Backyard Hydroponics Workshops this Saturday, January 11th, 2014 from 10:00 am – 12:00 pm at the Fellsmere Farmer’s Market and Mercado. Lisa and friends from Florida Veggies will teach us how to grow our own vegetables hydroponically at home in a fast simple way using a plastic kiddie pool that doesn’t require a lot of expensive equipment.
What is hydroponics? Hydroponics is a way to grow plants without planting the seeds in dirt. Hydroponics is a preferred method of growing as it uses much less water. At the Florida Veggies & More Farm, the vegetables are grown in coconut husk and watered with a mixture of water and nutrients. “Within seven days, they’re (crops) popping up and you’re eating lettuce in about 28 to 30 days,” Brenneman said.
There will be a separate workshop on hydroponic gardening for children.
Interested in this workshop and how you can apply it to your life? Think of the savings and nutritional benefits. What can be hydroponically grown? Tomatoes, cucumbers, lettuce, peppers, house plants, culinary herbs and flowering plants to name a few.
